Activities for Kids
Telegraph Family Friendly Awards
The Rural Life Centre is proud to be long listed in 2013 & 2014 for the Telegraph Family Friendly Awards as part of the 'Kids in Museums' initiative.
Museums have a reputation for being stuffy. However we always endeavour to have things for kids to do at the Rural Life Centre.
We have thousands of artifacts on display, however we know that static exhibits don't always inspire the younger generations. A lot of our collection is exhibited in walk-through buildings and in many cases you are able to touch the displays.
Particularly good fun is to all have a go at pumping water in the Victorian Laundry, though you are likely to get wet!
During the school holidays we hold 'Activity Thursdays' which are specifically aimed at keeping the little ones entertained with plenty of craft activities and games.
Our Events are all family friendly, and activities are always available for children. Sunday Funday is particularly good for children to experience the fun of the village fair. Details of all our events are on the Events page.
The Rural Life Centre has sheep on-site for most of the year; they join us for lambing around May. Other animals are on show at Events such as: 'Farm Animals of Yesteryear', and 'Donkey Day Out'.
Our small children's play area is located next to the Cricket Pavilion. It consists of well maintained vintage equipment including two roundabouts, a large slide, see-saw and swings. The playground is restricted to 13 year olds and under and we ask that children are supervised by an adult at all times.
Old Kiln Light Railway
Running every Sunday and bank holiday Monday throughout the main season, the railway is a delight to kids of all ages! The railway is run by an independant team of dedicated enthusiasts who man and maintain the rolling stock. There is usually a small additional charge for rides on The Old Kiln Light Railway.
