Learning outside the classroom Logo Kids In Museums Logo Art Award Supporter

We would like to invite teachers and their families to enjoy a FREE day out exploring the Rural Life Centre. Discover the potential for a school visit and find out about the immersive workshops which we offer that support your areas of learning.

We offer a wide variety of workshops, demonstrations will occur throughout the day:

Waggon Shed

  • Wheelwright Workshop – chat to one of our demonstrators. Watch a demonstration at 2pm.

By the Gypsy Vardos (Waggons)

  • Come and talk about our developing schools programme, looking at gypsy life and its history in the local community.

Churt Building

  • Watch the woodturner at work, a bonus demonstration during most visits. Make a special request if you particularly want such a demonstration. Subject to volunteer availability.

Victorian Laundry

  • Monday Washday - an immersive workshop takes place here.
    Why not try your hand at doing some washing today?

Frensham Building

  • Household Artefacts– used during the “Housework Before Electricity” workshop, featuring “life below stairs”.
  • Traditional Farming Through the Ages - the work of a typical farmer’s boy throughout the year, is explained through an interactive talk.
    Handle artefacts and learn about food.
  • Period Toys are always available for use at break and lunch times.

Village Hall

  • Find out about our Country Childhood workshop.
  • Learn about hardships and health. This workshop includes “hands on” experience and role play.
  • Use our “Make Do & Mend” workshop to link with a WWII topic, or even to explore issues of recycling and sustainability.
  • Learning at the Rural Life Centre – loan boxes, museum leaflets, quizzes and sample programmes etc.

School Building

  • Used for the “Bygone School” workshops. Choose your period. Demonstrations at 12 noon and 3.15pm.

Cycle Workshop

  • Visit our newest exhibition, the HFL funded Cycle Workshop and talk to our dedicated volunteers.
