Volunteering

Join our team!

We are always recruiting! The Rural Life Living Museum depends on volunteers to operate. Our volunteers are the lifeblood of the museum; without them it simply wouldn't be here.

Volunteers work in all areas of museum, looking after our grounds and buildings maintenance, caring for our vast collection, maintaining a wide array of working objects and most importantly showcasing our museum to the public.

Our volunteers are a diverse community of people from all walks of life - all ages are welcome, and we work together to maintain and improve Madge and Henry Jackson's legacy.

Have a look through the tiles below and feel free to click on any of the links and apply. If you would like a more general chat about volunteering with us, please get in touch and arrange to come and visit, we would be happy to talk to you.

Our team

Volunteers work with our museum team. We have our charity Trustees looking after the governance and strategy with the Museum Director and full and part time staff dealing with Operations, Collections and the Estate, Learning and Discovery, Accounts and Communications and Marketing. Please get in touch if you have a question for the team.

As a volunteer, we can offer you:

  • The support and training to develop your confidence, teamwork, communication, and knowledge so you can interact with visitors through a range of hands-on learning activities.
  • The chance to get involved, have fun, and to help build special memories for visitors.
  • Free entry to the site all year round, discount at the shop and cafe, entry to special events, tea, coffee, and refreshments.
  • Be part of a social community of over 100+ volunteers and come to our annual volunteers BBQ.

Volunteering opportunities at the Museum

There are lots of opportunities to help at the museum and we welcome short stints of help as much as we do the longer jobs. Here is a flavour of what we do. If you fancy joining us for a day fill in the form and we will be in touch. Be great to meet you.

For companies or organisations looking to spend a day volunteering at our site please email info@rural-life.org.uk. We can offer team away days and adult courses too.

Not all the collections tasks are physical; a large part of the work we undertake is desk-based inputting to the database and working on digitising collections to improve access to it. Our collection is extremely diverse, full of oddities as well as items of everyday life, there is a surprise round every corner. If you would like to join us in exploring and caring for the collection, please use the form to get in touch.
