Vanishing Skills

The Museum has a 50-year history of presenting unusual, rare and vanishing craft skills to visitors. Many skills shown during the early days of the Museum have now died out with the volunteers that showed them. Our vanishing skills volunteers often work at weekends, presenting activities from corn dolly making, hop picking (we grow the hops first) traditional brewing, rag rugging, wheelwrighting, blacksmithing to name but a few! If you have a special or rare skill that you would like to show to visitors, teach others or perhaps have visitors get hands on and have a go, we would love to hear from you. We have a future ambition to set up and deliver adult courses in a wide range of skills-based subjects, we are not there yet, but with your help, passion and enthusiasm we could be!

Vanishing Skills Team Details

The Vanishing Skills Team generally meet at the weekend, particularly if there is a special event scheduled in order to showcase their skills for the visiting public in a busy setting.

We are looking for people who would like to become part of the museum team and impart their knowledge of historical crafts that may not be as commonly used as they once were.

We are particularly looking for people who would like to demonstrate trades such as signwriting, hedge laying, corn dolly making, leatherwork, basketry, willow weaving or wheelwrighting.

If you have a skill that is not covered in the list above but you believe it would fit in with the museum’s time frame and collection, then we would also like to hear from you.
The role is as active as you would like to make it depending on the skill you would like to demonstrate.
